Read all about it! A brand new musical at this year's Fringe!
"The Ding Dong Girls, the hilarious drag musical by Dora-winner Christopher Richards (Molly Wood) and author Gordon Bowness, is the mostly untrue legend of a cross-dressing misfit who gathers around him four other young gay men to form a madcap, politically-motivated drag troupe in early 1990s Toronto. The five friends hurtle off on a roller-coaster ride of self-delusion to create a magical world of power, beauty and sisterhood. This magical world stands in stark contrast to their gloomy reality. Will glamour win out?
Written by Dora-winner Christopher Richards (Molly Wood) and author Gordon Bowness, The Ding Dong Girls is inspired by Richards’ real-life experience running a popular drag troupe in Toronto in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Much has been fictionalized in the musical setting of his story, but much of the mayhem and the message remain true. Moreover, the star of the real drag troupe, Mama Dominatrix, joins the cast as narrator Rita-Dina Wedlock. Bowness, a central figure in LGBTQ media, wrote about Richards’ real-life drag troupe in the nonfiction anthology Queers Were Here, recently published by Biblioasis. After years as a magazine editor and critic, this is Bowness’s first play."
