“In the last few weeks, it feels like there has been an increase of brazen violence and theft in our Village. We know shops and been robbed and people have been threatened on the street.
Acts of violence like this can leave people feeling isolated, vulnerable and alone.
Let's come together this Friday for a one hour Community Support Walk. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink. We will walk as a friendly group, letting our friends, strangers, neighbours and local staff know that we support them, they are not alone and that for every one person that might threaten our safety there are a thousand of us that will care for and protect each other.
We know this is not a longer term solution and that long term solutions will require reflection, labour and money. But, at a time when so many might be feeling alone with their experiences, just showing up, being present and being visible is a radical act of community.
8:15pm - Meet at Glad Day
8:45pm - Walk starts
9:45pm - Walk ends
9:45pm - Return to Glad for informal conversations about next steps
In addition to this, there is a PUBLIC COMMUNITY MEETING on Thursday (6pm at Progress Place) where you can find out how to report an incident of violence, how you can reduce the chance of your business being a target, hear what plans are already in the works and get an update on local and city-wide trends of violence and theft this summer. Info posted in the comments.”
