In Conversation: Princess Nokia

Recently Princess Nokia came to Toronto to perform at a party and participate in a Q&A conversation. Princess Nokia (aka Destiny) works with producer Owwwlz (Christopher Lare). Looking to build a new genre, while embracing existing subgenres, she has created a neo-futuristic sound that's inspired by everything from 90's Rave and Drum & Bass, to Trip Hop and Afro Latin House.

The conversation hosted by Free Space (and organized by event team Thank you Kindly) between Destiny and Anupa Mistry brought in a crowd of about 200 mostly young women. Hot topics included urban feminism and maintaining creative autonomy within an industry that consistently puts female artists in boxes with a shelf life of only two years. She also emphasized using her art and her practice as a way to heal and to be seen and to be heard. After the talk she took the time to hug, chat and take pictures with the crowd.

Thank you Kindly is a partnership between Ariella Starkman and Allegra Christie. The programming and experiences they create are targeted towards community-growth, and are intentional, inclusive, and high energy. Be on the lookout for future events!

We sent May Truong to attend the convo and take pics of the amazing and beautiful people in the crowd.

UPDATE - Princess Nokia will be returning to Toronto on June 9th! Read details on our event listing.
