Top figure skating fashions of all time
Figure skating is a magical sport. It boasts some of the most notable Olympic athletes of all time and was also the backdrop for the greatest sporting scandal ever: remember Tonya and Nancy? And who doesn’t love a sport with terms such as salchow, lutz, twizzle, layback, and Ina Bauer (google that one)?
So yes, we tune in to figure skating for the combination of athleticism and drama, but we also tune in for the incredible on-ice fashion.
In short, we hope you all come to DJ Skate Nights; Yohomo on Ice this Saturday at the Natrel rink just beside the Harbourfront Centre and that YOU BRING A LOOK! You can skate, dance to the music and get some hot drinks, including the an exclusive Yohomo latte, at the Natrel Bistro located just beside the ice rink.
Here are some of the sport’s most iconic looks of all time:
// LOOK QUEENS AND ICONS
Surya Bonaly was often known as a rebel. She was powerful, athletic, didn’t wear tights on the ice, and possessed trademark back flips. She also wore ornate, over-the-top outfits designed by Christian Lacroix (see above).
Johnny Weir is a fashion icon who often brought drama to the ice, including this look for his swan program, which later inspired Jimmy MacElroy’s peacock outfit in Blades of Glory.
Aliona Savchenko won gold in 2018, in her fifth Olympics. She also lives for a catsuit. Here are her Pink Panther- and Avatar-inspired looks.
Kevin Van Der Perren
Here is skater Kevin van der Perren dressed as a skeleton. Need we say more.
Tonya Harding and her feathered bang. Name a more iconic duo. We’ll wait.
// THE MOMENTS
Rudy Galindo was one of figure skating’s first out gay athletes. This violin look was so extra.
The back violin
Speaking of string instruments, we think this is a full-torso cello bodysuit, and we’re into it.
This is Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko performing to “Sex Bomb.” It is… quite… something.
Olympic champ Ilia Kulik won gold wearing this outfit that many people described as a giraffe in patent leather.
Ice dancing can be seen as a strange sport. Here’s a very literal costume take for a routine set to Stravinsky’s Firebird.
These Russian ice dancers did an “aboriginal” routine. Racist and problematic is not the best on-ice look.
The daddy leather
Elvis Stojko is Drake’s fave skater and lived for rock ‘n’ roll, pleather and a full curly mullet in the mid 90’s.
