Opening Reception:
August 18 until September 8, 2016.

Toronto artist Meredith Jay invites us to Step Carefully, an investigation of the fine line between appreciation and appropriation. The body of work, produced over the course of a year, includes drawings and ceramics made during several self-directed residencies in Mexico.

Jay presents twelve drawings of the full moon, a monthly exercise in being attentive and disciplined in her practice. The thirteenth moon is a sculptural installation made up of 111 ceramic bird skulls. The artist made these as a response to the appropriation of cultural cliches she observed during her residencies. Each work is an act of repetition which became Jay’s own ritual of creation.

The artist’s practice involves acute self-awareness, like a mimetic urge to adapt to her surrounding. By reiterating the same subject in her drawings and the same shape in her sculpture, she explores muscle memory in an attempt to reprogram the self. Her further aim is to challenge the viewer to a meditation on authenticity.
