This is a cool thing. Description from the organizers below:
A monthly out-of-body experience at Handlebar, blending mind-expanding audio/visual delights from local electronic bands and DJs.
Our May edition focuses on Toronto's blossoming Underground R&B scene.
R-Flex: After the success of his EP launch, Ryan Anthony Robinson, otherwise known as R. Flex, delivers IN & OUT. Noted by his peers for its unique sound, R. Flex delivers a well-versed world where electronica marries R&B. Featuring production from A-Fos and Zlender, R. Flex employs his songwriting and vocals to storytelling heights. Tales of voyeurism, role-playing, and infidelity haunt the EP in ways that are simultaneously personal and anthemic.
Starting his music career first interrupting Noise Level’s creations in 2014, he’s gone on to release two mixtapes, collaborated with a myriad of artists (A-Fos, Zlender, Tush, James Bailey, Staasia Daniels, Positive Journey, Noise Level, Ian Doig-Phaneuf, Worldcatcher, and Jale O’Haara) and has begun to carve out a name for himself within the indie r&b scene in Toronto.
James Baley (aka Songbird Miyake-Mugler): Carving out an alternative and personal voice for himself, James Baley is a unique and multi-talented vocalist who’s high energy performance magnetizes audiences. Performing with the likes of FALANA, After Funk, Dinamo Azari and July Talk, to make a few, James is exploring and creating a space for himself in the Toronto arts community.
In November, James released his sophomore EP, ‘ROADS’ a personal and unapologetic expression of moments in his life. Six sensual and experimental dream pop and soul tracks that take you on a psychedelic and poppy journey through dreams, moments, and memories.
Judah Jump: Judah is a talented producer and DJ hailing from Hamilton who has been a fixture in the hip-hop and electronic music scene there. His monthly party Fufu Goodness, described as "Just a few artists and producers trying to create a positive and elevated platform for local Hamilton talent to share and promote their music and art" has been gaining steam and keeping dancefloors packed at club Sous Bas.
Jamal Jones (aka DJ Blip†or): Blip†or is just a name that sounds cool and was a long-running joke between friends. It stuck.
Years of theatre and music vocal training is the driving force for his vocal sounds. Raw, atmospheric, and story telling from level to level. Blip†or has been apart of many Toronto artist's music, lurking in digital shadows. He is a talented singer + DJ who will be throwing down on both spectrums at this edition of Astral Projections!
